How I Did Not Become the Godson of the First American Pope
“Non Habemus Papem.”
Whenever
A pope died,
My godfather,
Ziggy O’Connell,
Would make the rounds
Of all the taverns
Of Kewanee, Illinois
And introduce himself:
“Hi, my name’s
Ziggy O’Connell and
I’m running for pope
I’d very much appreciate
Your support.”
People would smile and nod
Until he went away.
And so far as I know,
He never got
A single vote.
Still,
I like
The idea—
Pope Ziggy!
